summer to fall

It’s transition week here in Portland. We have summer flowers and fall leaves.

The Japanese anemone is going strong. I planted a few of these several years ago, and now they are taking over my yard. I took out most of it this spring, but it’s all back.

IMG_0314

My cosmos died this summer, but I think it re-seeded itself and came back up through the anemone. The first batch wasn’t nearly as spectacular as these are.

Here’s what’s happening in the neighborhood:

There won’t be any fall color on my flowering plum tree, though. It’s dead. Half of it bloomed this spring, and then the whole thing died. This bird (flicker?) was enjoying it the other day.

Oh! I never showed you the October Single Skein Club package. Here it is:

pkg

A sweet pattern for fingerless mitts by Shannon Squire, a ball of Crystal Palace Mini Mochi in one of my favorite colorways (I have 5 balls of this in the same color, different dye lot in my stash from a design idea that didn’t pan out)…

mini

and some really cute stitch markers.

markers

I can’t work on these right now. I’m completely obsessed with one of the things I showed you in the last post. But I can’t show you yet…

August’s single skein…

I didn’t even open the Single Skein Club package while I was camping; the allure of the ruffle was strong. But I have now opened it so I can show you, gentle reader.

aug pkg

It’s an ingenious lacy scarflet by Sivia Harding. The yarn is Mirasol Tupa which is 50/50 merino and silk, in a deep auburn. It looks almost like chocolate. I love this yarn; I used it for my Hugs and Kisses Cabled Fingerless Mitts. It’s great to knit with.

tupa

The bonus this month:

bonus

A little scrabble tile Twisted yarn ball pendant.

Sweet! This may be my next project after the ruffle tank is off the needles. We’ll have to see which way my whims turn.

In other news, WordPress changed my theme to Coraline from Cutline, which is being phased out. If you came by and there was nothing on the sidebar, my apologies! Widgets have now been restored. Thanks for visiting!

just breezing through…

I finished my blue Breezy Market Tote this weekend.

Just in time! The next installment of Twisted’s Single Skein Club is out.

supplies

But I’ll have to show you what’s in it next time; I don’t have pictures yet. I’m tossing this into my bag, along with the new guitar strings, and going camping tomorrow. See you in a few days!

More April fun

Halfway through April, and I haven’t told you about the April Single Skein Club package from Twisted…tsk tsk. April just flew in on those blustery March winds, and I forgot!

april ssc

April’s package centers on a sweet pattern by Portland’s Lee Meredith, also known as Leethal. She is always marvelously inventive, and this month’s package confirms it. This project is customizable to the max.

isw bulky

The yarn is from Imperial Stock Ranch in Shaniko, Oregon; it’s their Native Twist Bulky. This is a single ply, soft spun wool. It’s from the sheep at the ranch, truly a home-grown Oregon product!

closeup

You may be wondering how to get from this yarn to the hats pictured in the pattern.

This looks like it will be a fun project!

Single Skein Club 2010

My family enrolled me in the 2010 Single Skein Club over at Twisted for Christmas. (Thanks, guys!) The club has a project every other month, six during the calendar year. It’s February, which means that it’s time for the first club offering. If you don’t have yours yet, and don’t want to know, look away now!

Have you averted your eyes? It’s almost too late!

Okay; it’s time.

ssc feb

This month’s offering is a sweet cowl and cuffs pattern by Star Athena. Star is the manager over at Twisted, and she’s also a brilliant designer with a primo sense of style, and a great teacher, too. I took her Sock Design class at Sock Summit last summer. Star’s Arctic Blast Mitts were the February kick off for the club last year. I made those…twice! Remember these?

duet

The yarn this month is Malabrigo Twist, a worsted weight plied baby merino wool yarn, in the Indiecita coloway. I love it. Blues and greens; it’s perfect. It feels wonderful.

indiecita

Look at the color…

indiecita close

And this month’s goodie? A project bag from Flower Pie Designs, also local to Portland. The bags are all different, so don’t be surprised to see someone else’s completely different Single Skein Club project bag! (Yes I know the characters are upside down. I can even read some of them. On the back of the bag, they’re right side up, because the bag is one piece of fabric, folded, not two pieced together.)

bag

I love this bag; it will be perfect for corralling my project inside my big Sock Summit tote.

There are a few spaces left in the Single Skein Club. You can pick up your club kits locally, or Twisted will ship to you if you’re far away. Contact Twisted if you want in on the fun!

And here’s a sweet opportunity for those of you who are local to PDX. Sweet Sound of Jazz, a fund-raiser for the Band programs at Grant High School. Enjoy music and a dessert buffet, Friday evening, February 12, 7 p.m.

December Single Skein Club

It’s December, which means it’s time for the sixth and final 2009 offering of the Single Skein Club at Twisted. This club has been a ton of fun to be in, even if I didn’t knit most of the projects! There’s something so tantalizing about about knowing that a surprise is waiting for you at the yarn shop. If you haven’t picked up your kit yet, or if you’re non-local and waiting to receive your shipment, avert your eyes now. Oh, wait, I’ll distract you with this other picture, first.

persimmon

One of these things is not like the other…

But the color is pretty similar! We love clementines at our house; they’re sweet, juicy, seedless. A perfect small snack. My mom gave me this persimmon before we went away for Thanksgiving. After seeing them on a tree in North Carolina, we came home to eat this one.

Have you ever eaten a persimmon? The Teen laughingly insisted that it was a tomato. But it didn’t taste anything like a tomato! Sweet, but not overly so, and firm-ish like…a not quite ripe mango? Anyway, it was good, and it’s gone.

Okay, back to the Single Skein Club. Last chance to avert your eyes.

Ready?

yohoho ssc

This month’s kit has a very timely pattern for mittens, 100 grams of yarn, and a ruler with a built-in needle gauge. Always handy! Oh, there was also a twizzler that matched the yarn, but that was munched days ago.

hempwol

The yarn is Hempwol, a 65/35 wool/hemp blend. It feels nice. The color is a heathery red. Love it!

hempwol 2

I don’t think I’ll be knitting this into mittens until after Hanukkah and Christmas. There’s a lot of knitting going on here, and I’m pretty pleased with all of it. More, later.

San Francisco déjà vu, and Single Skein Club

DH & I took the kids to San Francisco at the end of August. We had a great touristy weekend. This was going to be our planned summer vacation, until we decided to visit Vietnam and Tokyo. It’s been a big travel year.

bridge

We toured the Davies Symphony Hall and San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a friend who plays for the symphony. The Teen sat down at the piano in one of the recital halls.

sfcm

He even remembered part of a sonatina he played about six years ago. He hasn’t played piano since 2005 or so. How does he do that?

sfcm steinway

When I told Mom we were going, she said, “I never get to go anywhere.” That got me thinking. Mom’s birthday was coming; why not take her to San Francisco? So my sisters and I took her for a girls’ weekend. My August trip was a great preview!

comp

Of course we went to Chinatown; we’re Chinese! We had a very touristy fun weekend. We even rode a cable car. (Excuse the wind noise; it was windy.)

P1000135

Before we left, I went to Twisted to pick up my Single Skein Club package for October. If you’re still waiting for yours, you should avert your eyes now. Otherwise I’ll ruin your surprise. Look away!

P1000250

This month’s club offering is a very chic hat by Lee Meredith, aka Leethal. It’s called Ocean Breezes. Here’s a Rav link to some better pix.

The yarn is Alpaca With a Twist Highlander Tweed. It’s beautiful yarn, smooth and soft. I love the sheen it has from the alpaca. I even got to choose my own color, which made this little control freak very happy.

P1000259

P1000256

The package also includes these very cute fish buttons, some cedar moth balls, and some point protectors. And Halloween candy.

P1000252

Even though I haven’t knit the past several kits, I really like being part of the club. The suspense and thrill of finding out what’s in the package pleases me. The patterns are always clever, and the yarn is always sumptuous. I’ve been introduced to some yarns that I never would have considered in my browsing. Cool!

Single Skein Club is leading me down the path to Sock Summit

It’s June, and that means it’s time for the next installment of Twisted’s Single Skein Club. This club has updates every other month. I still haven’t knitted April’s project, a cool toe-up sock by Chrissy Gardiner. But I will conquer my toe-up aversion soon. Sock Summit is coming!

Enough chit-chat. If you don’t want to see what’s in June’s package, avert your eyes.

Still here? Let’s see!

june pkg

Look at this yarn! Malabrigo Lace yarn, one skein (of course). The color is “glazed carrot,” and that’s a great description. It’s not plain orange. There’s a depth to the color that looks like it has a brown sugar glaze.

carrot

The exclusive club pattern is the Seedling Sampler Scarf by Sarah Pope. It has three lace patterns in it, and best of all, it has beads! The beads are a bronzy color (I thought they were purple in the shop, go me) and look like seeds. The beads are strung onto the yarn before knitting. How? With this cool collapsible bead needle! I’m going to be using this needle for my other beading projects, too, so this is a great tool. And there’s a sweet SSC stitch marker to round out the package.

june goodies

I think the gals at Twisted are leading me down the garden path to Sock Summit. First there’s that toe-up thing. Yup, need to know that for a couple of my classes. Now there are the beads. I’m taking a bead class at Sock Summit, too, but I think we’re adding beads as we go, instead of pre-stringing. But still…

Speaking of Sock Summit, DH is bemused by how excited I am about the prospect of a knitting conference. I’ve gone to other conferences before (Stitches and TKGA) but the buzz around those is nothing like the Sock Summit buzz. I keep telling him that it’s the power of personality (Stephanie and Tina), and it’s almost like a cult. DH has also been fascinated by the whole Sock Summit registration ruckus. He’s in marketing, and you can see his take on it here.

And because it’s the beginning of June, I have to show you where that pile of bark mulch ended up:

stones

front flowers

Two thirds of it is in the front and side yards. The last third has made it to the back yard, but it’s in a pile! Soon and very soon…

Free Lace Patterns, and a Single Skein Club update

Knitting Daily (Interweave Knits) is giving away 7 free lace patterns. It’s a free download, but you have to register on their site. I particularly like the Tailored Scallops Cardigan by Pam Allen. It’s from the book Lace Style, published by Interweave. I haven’t chosen my next big sweater project yet, but this is in the running.

Go get your download!

In other news: It’s April, and that means that the second installment of Twisted’s Single Skein Club is ready for pick up! DH bought my membership for me for Christmas; it’s nice to have a surprise every other month, all year long.

SPOILER ALERT

If you’re a member, and haven’t picked up your package yet, don’t look any further. You’ll want to be surprised by this lovely project.

Ready?

Here’s the package:

april ssc

A very interesting sock pattern from Chrissy Gardiner, some Louet Gems sport weight merino yarn (my favorite yarn weight for socks, hooray), and the coolest pen, ever. (This is all part of the universe’s plan to get me to knit toe-up socks…)

What makes this pen the coolest pen ever?

measure

It has a tape measure in the top. Put *that* in your knitting bag!

The yarn is sage green, with a nice twist. (Green in the first two pictures are more accurate than the one below.) I’ve used this yarn before, and it is great to work with.

sage

Looks like spring!

Ebony and Ivory…

ab mitts

I just finished my Arctic Blast Mitts, and I love them. They’re like little clouds. Sweet!

ab mitts 2

The only mod I made was unintentional; I was supposed to end with 5 rounds of ribbing, and I ended with two. Didn’t read closely, duh! But they’re the perfect length on my small hands; 5 rounds would have made them too long. I meant to do that; yeah, that’s the ticket…

action

This is the first time I’ve used a sewn bind off. It was easy, and it’s nice and stretchy. And I loved the arrowhead lace pattern on this so much that I started my blue Marisol Hacho socks in the same pattern. But the lace is completely lost in the variegation, so it’s back to the drawing board on those.

Arctic Blast Mitts, pattern by Star Athena, exclusively for Twisted‘s Single Skein Club
Malabrigo Silky Merino, 1 skein (50 grams), with a decent amount left over
Lantern Moon 6-inch Ebony Sox Stix, size 3

stix

I love these needles; they’re the perfect length for the way I hold the my needles. And they’re more blunt than pointy, which fits my “scoop” rather than “poke” method of knitting.

Lovely!
