Fern Lace Shawlette re-release

When it rains, it pours! Here’s the third of my patterns whose rights have come back to me just now. This is the Fern Lace Shawlette. It was originally published in the Knit Picks Under 100 Knit Collection. Now you can get the single pattern from me through Ravelry. You can still purchase it in e-book or book form from Knit Picks, too.

Fern is a crescent shaped shawlette, knit from side to side. The lacy border is knit at the same time as the garter stitch body, which increases from one end to the center and then decreases to the other end. Optional beading along the leaves’ center veins adds sparkle and weight for drape.

Fern is knit with fingering weight yarn. I used Knit Picks Palette, 100g of Peruvian Highland Merino wool.

Autumn Scarf is live! and a giveaway

My latest design is out! It’s the Autumn Scarf (Ravelry link), part of the 2013 Swish Pattern Collection for KnitPicks. This ultra-long scarf looks great doubled around your neck, and is cozy and comfortable in worsted weight superwash merino wool Swish. It begins with a provisional cast on at the center neck, and is knit out to one leafy end, and then the other. The leaves are my favorite part.

I’m really pleased to have a design in this collection. The collection includes six items, all created for Swish: four sweaters, a throw, and my scarf. Check it out here. All of the patterns are available as individual downloads, and also in an ebook and softcover book.

I’m having a great design year. Next up is a design coming out in Doomsday Knits from Cooperative Press in December. It’s called Thrumviator. I have two more designs that will be published in December, and two by the end of January. This is the fun part, because most of the work is done, and I’m just waiting to see it happen. I’m looking forward to sharing all of these with you.

It’s Rhinebeck weekend

aka NY Sheep and Wool Festival. No, I’m not there. But this video makes me want to be there. So much wool! So much joy! Gale Zucker is a fabulous photographer.

While we’re on the subject of wool, Knit Picks is giving away a color sampler of their Palette yarn. That’s all 150 colors! It’s 100% wool, plied fingering weight. I’ve knit with it before and love my finished object. Which I can’t show you yet. (A recurring theme around here lately.) Go enter to win! You do have to

Oh, I just had to show you the pretty yellow spring green on the other side of the ball. Anyway, the winner is Leslie, of More with Les! Leslie said,

I wish I lived closer to you — I would TOTALLY take your Entrelac class. That, and steeks, are two of the advanced techniques I still need to master…

I wish you could have taken the class, too! We had a great time, and everyone walked away with the basic building blocks of entrelac evident on their needles. Base triangles, side triangles, left and right leaning rectangles. And most learned to purl back backwards; that was an AHA moment. I hope you get a good start on entrelac with this pattern and the Chroma. We’ll see about steeking later this year; I want to learn, too. Be fearless in your knitting!

I’m glad I knit all my class samples before the weekend. It was busy here! D came down from Seattle to celebrate her birthday, and she and V and I had a spa day at Edgefield. It was nearly perfect; the soaking pool was not as hot as it was supposed to be (technical issues), so we didn’t spend that long in it. But the spa services were great, as expected. We had an overnight at V’s with a couple more friends, and I gave these to D for her birthday.

I call them Relentlessly Cheery, and they really are. They’re knit with Malabrigo Worsted, so they’re extremely soft, and warm, too. I hardly ever block socks; I mainly use the blockers for display at trunk shows, but they really make the socks look great, don’t they?

V’s gift to Doreen? She’s knitting my Hugs and Kisses fingerless mitts, but only one is done, in deep purple. I had my Beaujolais pair there; S tried them on and I was afraid I wasn’t going to get them back!

My favorite moment of the weekend was after dinner, when all five of us pulled out our knitting as we sat around the fire. This isn’t a knitting group, but by coincidence we had all brought some with us. I know how to pick my friends!

Speaking of friends, have you signed up for Among Friends? It’s a yarn and pattern club offered by Knitted Wit and Sincere Sheep, and I’m the designer for April. I love my design and hope you will, too! I’m really pleased to be part of this group of friends, including Carrie Sullivan of IrishGirlieKnits and Michelle Miller of Fickleknitter. Michelle is the only friend in the group that I haven’t met in person, but we’ll remedy that later this year! It’s a privilege to work with this group of entrepreneurial women.

This Little Ziggy on KnitPicks

It’s up! This Little Ziggy has debuted on KnitPicks. It can be knit for sizes 2T and 4T. Do you have a cute little munchkin who needs a little Ziggy pizazz?

Also in the KnitPicks department, I’ve heard from some of you that my Lacy Entrelac Infinity Scarf is in the current KnitPicks catalog. I haven’t received mine yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing it!

Log cabin blanket and friends

I finished my log cabin blanket last night.

This blanket began with leftover yarn from four entrelac felted bags (pattern and yarn from knitpicks.com). After a while I ran out of leftover yarn, and had to buy more to keep the blanket going. Then I got sidetracked when I designed and made three felted slip stitch totes last spring using the yarn I bought for the blanket.

That meant I had to buy more yarn, again. As I got close to finishing the blanket, I used leftover yarn from the blanket to make socks, and Pippi. I had to dip into the blanket’s last ball of hollyberry (red) to finish Pippi. And when I finished binding off the last log on the blanket in hollyberry, I only had one yard left. That was close!

The details:

Log Cabin Blanket from Mason Dixon Knitting by Kay Gardiner & Ann Shayne
KnitPicks Wool of the Andes worsted (a great inexpensive workhorse of a yarn)
Lantern Moon US size 7 ebony circular needles (last one was 40 inches long)
Finished size: I knit until there were 10 stripes of color on each side of the center rectangle. It came out to be 44″ x 46″
Started: July 2007
Finished: Jan. 2, 2009

I didn’t put on an edging. I’m leaving open the possibility of making it bigger, somewhere down the road. For now, it’s a nice snuggly hanging out on the sofa afghan.

I love how this turned out. The colors make me really happy!

More, more, more…Athena

I finished my second Athena entrelac neck warmer last night. Purling back backwards (not turning the work each row) makes this go pretty quickly. But it looks like this Athena won’t be for me. She’ll be going on to her new life as a shop model. Shannon and Emily will be selling the hard copy pattern at Twisted, and they’d like a sample. Done! So I picked up more Taos and will make another one for myself, in a bit. Check out this color:

And I bought myself a little present for the next one: 16″ ebony circulars from Lantern Moon. Mmmmm, I love these needles. I didn’t realize that they made 16″ circulars, but now that I know, I had to get a few. Great tools make knitting even more of a pleasure!

I’m also dreaming of some quick worsted weight socks, because it’s cold and snowy, and my boots are just a tad big so there’s room. I think I’ll use some stash KnitPicks Wool of the Andes and make something fun with a color pattern, because I have a lot of bits of different colors left from other projects.

I guess I should be cleaning my house for Christmas, but if I clean it now, it will be messy by Christmas Eve. Maybe tomorrow!

I can stop at any time…

I just have to decide when! It’s about 36 inches square right now.

I started this Log Cabin blanket in July 2007. I don’t work on it very often; it’s a good mindless in-between projects project. But I always seem to have some other project going! And it’s getting kind of big for carrying around. I pulled it out a few weeks ago because Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne were coming to town, and I learned to log cabin from their book, Mason-Dixon Knitting.

I originally started it with yarn left over from a felted bag project, but I had to order more yarn as the blanket progressed. Then I used the new yarn to design more felted bags! Back to the drawing board. Symmetry brat that I am, I have to have an equal number of logs on each side.

Here’s what I chose for the rest of the blanket. Some of it was already in the stash; five are new but the colors have been used previously in the blanket.
