April is for casting on

It’s time for the next Socks that Rock knitalong on Ravelry. The pattern choices this month are Shur’tugal (Dragon Rider) and Mad Color Weave. I chose Shur’tugal, and bought this STR Mediumweight for it last month.

The color is Bleeding Hearts. Although there’s not much knitting to show yet, I couldn’t resist taking this picture, because it wasn’t raining!

But I’m not sure I like what the color is doing. The brighter colors began a spiral around the leg while I was knitting the ribbing, but when I changed to the dragon scale pattern, the spiral reversed direction, resulting in a huge color pool. The reverse side of the sock is all dark. I’m going to go through one more repeat, and then decide if I can stand it.

I also picked up the next installment of the Single Skein Club from Twisted; I’ll take some pictures soon!

Knit on!

  1. Love the colorway. I hope by this time next year I can do a sock KAL!

  2. Your bleeding hearts are up and blooming???? Mine aren’t poking there little leaves out of the ground….yet.

That’s going to be so pretty.

  3. I’m excited to see what’s from twisted!

  4. That looks like a great pattern. I’ve had this same problem with a skein of STR; tried 3 different patterns and ended up frogging them all. May you have better results!

  5. My bleeding hearts aren’t even peeking out yet. As for the pooling, can you change the number of stitches? Sometimes that helps. But the color is beautiful!

  6. It’s not going to magically get better. I’ve learned the hard way! However, if there is a way to add several stitches to the pattern…here and there an extra purl stitch, for instance…you may be able to discourage the pooling. That is the advice from the book Knitting Socks with Handpainted Yarn. It’s a great book, and has some patterns that work for “yarn that can’t be tamed”. Good luck!

  7. If you can’t stand it, I bet it would look great in Mad Color Weave.

  8. I have the hardest time with STR yarn. Love the colorways but they always do weird things when I try to knit with them.

  9. Maybe as the sock gets wider it will look better. You are so good at all this though I know you’ll figure it out.
