Chihuly Garden and Glass, Seattle

Oh! I was so excited about TNNA and my new iPad, I forgot to tell you about last week’s little jaunt to the Emerald City. I went up for a piano friend’s birthday dinner, and had the afternoon to myself beforehand. I ended up at Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle Center, a stunning new exhibit right next to the Space Needle.

I love the Space Needle. It’s so iconic, much like my beloved Eiffel Tower. This is the view from the Glasshouse, a large area with these glass flowers suspended from the ceiling. Wouldn’t this be a great place for a party? The exhibit has both indoor and outdoor elements. One of the first things you see indoors is this towering piece.

A closer look reveals that it’s an incredibly detailed seascape.

There’s a room with glass pieces in the ceiling, much like the Chihuly Bridge of Glass at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma.

The room leads to this view through a doorway.

Which draws you in to this:

My favorite piece is below. It’s two boats, one filled with round balls like Japanese fishing floats, and the other…well, you tell me what they are. I love the way the boats are reflected in the floor. They’re bigger than they appear in the picture, maybe 8 or 9 feet long, each?

There’s a beautiful garden outside, too. I love how the Space Needle is reflected by so many shiny surfaces.

It was a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon. Birthday dinner was fun, too. A very nice quick getaway. OK, back to TNNA prep!

  1. Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing Michele. Have a great trip to TNNA!

  2. Wow! Marvelous. Thanks for sharing. On list for next visit to Seattle.

  3. Beautiful! The Oklahoma City Museum of Art has a permanent exhibit of Chihuly glass. It’s magnificent. Do a search for Google images for the museum and you’ll see some more beautiful glass! Pretty stuff, huh?

  4. Wow! I love Chihully! We have one piece of his in our local art museum. I’d love to see more.

  5. Amazing art … thanks for sharing the pics!

  6. So much talent on display there! I wish it had been on exhibit when I was at the Space Needle seven (?) years ago. Yet another reason to go back, as soon as possible. (Sadly, ASAP probably means at least two more years to wait. Sigh.)

  7. Great photos! Thank you. I walked in to see my old neighbor’s apartment next-door and immediately asked if that was a Chihuly bowl by the window. He said yes and I stopped the dog immediately! He said it cost as much as a small car. Glad my husband didn’t knock it over. One of his acolytes did a grapevine, right down to the roots, in a SLC restaurant – amazing works. I’ll have to check it out next time we’re in town. Dee

  8. I love art glass. We went to the Bellagio in Vegas – their lobby has a fantastic ceiling. Maybe I can talk my hubby into going to Seattle for the weekend. I’d love to see that exhibit.

Wow, that is some beautiful glass work! I’ll have to keep my eye out for other pieces by him.

  10. Beautiful! My hubby & I were fortunate to go to a similar exhibit in San Francisco several years ago. Truly breathtaking art!

  11. Oh, WOW, I need to get back to Seattle! I’ve been through it twice or three times, but only got to explore the city a very tiny bit. I’m mostly enchanted with the numerous tiny parks all around the city. 🙂 We got TO the Space Needle (not going up in, thanks, but the view is cool from the ground, too), but didn’t see this place. Definitely need to go back some day! 😀
