Black hand knit cowl featuring assigned pooling color motifs

Once I determined how to best make these motifs, this cowl was a hoot to knit. I made it a little longer in the front, to cover any gaps in a V-neckline.

The yarn is a worsted weight space-dyed, from Stranded By the Sea in Edmonds, Washington. I got it at Red Alder Fiber Arts Retreat in February.

Should I write up a pattern?

Someone on Instagram said it reminded them of holiday lights. i don’t want to limit ideas, but Light Bulb Moment felt like a great name. What do you think?

I love it! It sure looks like holiday lights.

    • Thank you! Still considering names; I don’t want to limit thinking that it’s a seasonal cowl. That would mean waiting til fall to release it…I am not a patient person!

I’m not patient either and want to knit that shawl soon. What about Candlelights for a name or PDX Candlelights or PNW Candlelights or Knitteratti Candlelights? I’ll be stopping by Stranded by the Sea store in May and hope to buy the yarn then.

yes you should write up the pattern .

  3. yes you definitely should. Love the colors

  4. I think this would be a fun pattern. I don’t recall you having done much with worsted for this size cowl, so I think that would be a plus. And if the yarn shop would make more skeins like this? That would rock.

    • The worsted weight makes it a quick knit! And yes, I’d hope that Tara at Stranded by the Sea would want to make more of this colorway. Bonus: It’s UV reactive, really pops under a blacklight.

  5. That’s exactly what I thought too when I saw the picture – Holiday Lights. Perfect Christmas cowl.

    • I don’t love the word bulb, it looks funny! So still mulling that over. Holiday Lights is great, but I don’t want to wait until next fall to release it.

  6. Or, Will’o the Wisp?

  7. I think if they were the other way up, they would 100% be some sort of holiday light. But the way they are, they look like candle flames to me. And because of the bright colour, I think my brain specifically thought birthday candles at first glance.

    • The motifs are pretty directional. I like them both ways. But the reason they’re this way? I wasn’t sure how far the yarn would go, and I wanted the neck section to be a certain height. The V section was limited by how much yarn I had left!

  8. I like the name you chose. It does look like holiday lights. However, if I were buying the yarn, I would prefer a pastel palette, like light pink, pale blue, pale or medium yellow with the dye being multicolor brights, so it would look like flowers growing, using the same pattern. I would buy that color scheme.

    • I’m still mulling over names. The word bulb isn’t particularly pretty. And yes, this would work with any pooling yarn; pastels would be pretty!
